Jordan is Home of the Holy Land and including some of the world’s oldest Christian communities, Jordan teems with breathtaking sacred sites that attract people from all over the world. From the location where Jesus was baptized, according to the Gospel of John, to Herod’s palace, Jordan’s many well-preserved holy sites bring biblical stories to life, preserving ancient history in the landscape and architecture.
Al Salt After World War I and the establishment of Transjordan, Al-Salt may have seemed the obvious place for Amir Abdullah to choose as his capital, but disagreements with some of the people there helped convince Abdullah of the merits of Amman. Though small, Amman had the Hijaz Railway, and thus better communications with both. Damascus and southern Transjordan. It also had more room to expand. as-Salt has since remained a small country town, and to this day it has some of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Jordan, and is unburdened by the requirements of a capital city.
Baptism Site “Bethany” Situated on the eastern bank of the River Jordan, nine kilometres north of the Dead Sea, the archaeological site consists of two distinct areas: Tell Al-Kharrar, also known as Jabal Mar-Elias (Elijah’s Hill) and the area of the churches of Saint John the Baptist near the river. Situated in a pristine natural environment the site is believed to be the location where Jesus of Nazareth was baptized by John the Baptist. It features Roman and Byzantine remains including churches and chapels, a monastery, caves that have been used by hermits and pools in which baptisms were celebrated, testifying to the religious character of the place. The site is a Christian place of pilgrimage.
Mount Nebo Enjoy a private airport pickup before heading to Mount Nebo, mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land that he would never enter.
Madaba-St George’s Greek Church This rather modest 19th-century Greek Orthodox church houses a treasure of early Christianity. Imagine the excitement in 1884 when Christian builders came across the remnants of a Byzantine church on their construction site. Among the rubble, having survived willful destruction, fire and neglect, the flooring they discovered wasn’t just another mosaic but one with extraordinary significance: to this day, it represents the oldest map of Palestine in existence and provides many historical insights into the region.
Mukawir also known as Machaerus, is a fortified palace that overlooks the iconic Dead Sea. Although little remains of this regal landmark today, visitors can still explore the Roman baths and castle walls that contributed to its defense system, Mukawir is located right on top of a hill just two kilometers from the village of Mukawir. The hill towers 1100 meters above the Dead Sea and the castle can be viewed from afar. It is a steep climb to reach the castle but the views are certainly worth it.
KerakAn ancient Crusader stronghold, Kerak sits 900m above sea level and lies inside the walls of the old city. The city today is home to around 170,000 people and continues to boast a number of restored 19th century Ottoman buildings, restaurants, places to stay, and the like. But it is undoubtedly Kerak Castle that dominates.
Petra The ancient city of Petra is one of Jordan’s national treasures and by far its best known tourist attraction. Petra is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. Admired then for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, Petra is a UNESCO World Heritages Site and one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Inhabited by the Nabateans, Edomites and Romans, Petra brought together the knowledge and skill of these civilizations to create this world wonder. Caravans laden with incense, silks, spices and other exotic goods would rest at Petra.
